Recent studies have explored certain changes with aging of neurons containing neuropeptide Y of the cerebral tortes in the spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats. Changes of NPY immunoreactive (NPY-ir) cell bodies and processes with aging in the cerebral tortes of aged SHR and aged WKY rats were demonstrated by immunohistochemistry.
In the 12 week-old WKY rats of the control group, NPY-it cell bodies and fiber density were appeared higher than the those of 12 week-old SHR rats of the control group. NPY-it cell bodies and fiber density of the frontal cortex, parietal cortex, and occipital cortex in the 12 week-old WKY rats were observed higher than those of other cerebral cortex. In the 12 week-old SHR rats of the control group, NPY-it cell bodies and fiber density of the frontal cortex and insular cortex were observed higher than those of the other cerebral cortex.
In the aging group, loss of NPY-it neurons and fiber density were observed all of the cerebral cortex in the 18 month-old WKY, 18 month-old SHR and 22 month-old SHR. But, NPY-it neurons and fiber density of the 18 month-old WKY rats were higher than those of the 18 month-old SHR and 22 month-old SHR.
